Dolphin Studio

  • Experience Art in the Making

Perched on a hill overlooking the serene waters of Shelter Island, Dolphin Studios is the lakeside creative haven of printmaker Laurie Dolphin. Founded and built in 2020, the studio emerged from Laurie's desire for a larger, more versatile workspace. What began as a vision for an intimate workshop space-where she could host printmaking classes like those that inspired her early career-soon grew into a fully realized art studio designed for both creation and community.

Lighting played a central role in the design and planning of Dolphin Studios. With its soaring ceilings and strategically placed high windows, the space is bathed in natural light throughout the day, allowing the surrounding landscape to gently filter in and become part of the creative atmosphere.

At the heart of the studio stands a Charles Brand printing press, crafted by the oldest manufacturer of fine art presses in the country. Laurie acquired the press from Dan Welden, renowned printmaster and inventor of the Solarplate technique-a fitting connection that ties the studio to a lineage of innovation and craftsmanship.

Though Dolphin Studios has yet to host large-scale classes, it has already welcomed a variety of art viewings, gatherings, and creative events. Visitors often remark on the warmth and inspiration that fills the space. We invite you to come experience it for yourself-schedule a visit today and see where artistry meets the beauty and creative history of Shelter Island.
